The User Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

My customer encountered the above error flag while trying to logon to a particular Windows 7 workstation this morning. Investigation shows that some other users can logon successfully while she couldn't logon. Futher examinations on Windows 7 registry revealed that show that user's profile has been damaged with (.bak) extension.

Resolution:

  • Logon using local Administrator credential
  • Locate and open "Users" directory path
  • Rename affected user profile
  • Load Windows 7 registry editor(regedit.exe)
  • Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
  • Right-click on ProfileList folder(Key) then click Find
  • Type affected username and click on "Find Next" command button
  • Right Click then delete the affected user key

Restart the terminal and ask the user to logon again.
